Rahway River
This vintage postcard shows the Rahway River, which trickles through South Orange. In 1900 the river and other wetlands were blamed for the excessive mosquito population, which were known to carry malaria. A mosquito commission was formed to eradicate the mosquito population; its great success was noted in the New York City and Washington D.C. newspapers. (Private collection)
